Bonsai Repotting for Beginners in Driftpile

For every tree that is bonsai, eventually comes a time when its root system has taken all the space in the pot, restraining further development needed to support the plant that is growing. An operation of bonsai repotting and root pruning should be carried out, to deal with this problem. It is going to reorganize the root system and permit the tree to grow healthy and vigorously for many years. Tricks in the next post will provide you with an overview on the best way to perform bonsai repotting by yourself.

First, you need to check whether it is already the time for bonsai repotting. This has to be done annually during early spring, when the tree is still in dormancy. Gradually ease the tree from its pot and analyze the rootball. If you see long roots encircling the interior side of the pot or the rootball, it is already the time for bonsai repotting to be carried out.
Prepare a fresh pot, where the tree will be put, or clean the old one. Cover the drainage holes using a plastic net, fixing it using a bit of wire. Then put a layer of grit on the base of the pot, then, and to enable emptying of earth, on which the tree will soon be planted a layer on top of it.

The next step in the bonsai repotting procedure would be to displace the old earth from your rootball, rather using chopsticks when the pot is ready. Then prune the longest roots with a sharp pair of scissors or shears. Also search for just about any dead, rotting, injured or infected roots, and remove them too to refrain from distributing root rot. Plan to remove up to 1/3 of general root mass.

Finally set the tree inside the pot that is prepared and tie it with the wire that is anchorage, to ensure that it will not be rocked by wind in the forthcoming weeks, when its roots aren't yet fully regenerated. Fill the rest of the pot with fresh soil, ensuring there are no air pockets. Water the compost completely, to help it settle.

The tree will need about six weeks for regeneration, with the bonsai repotting operation whole. After that, its root system is likely to be able to grow growing more fine feeder roots in a denser rootball, than what might be achieved with unpruned roots. This will translate into more essential nutrients feeding your plant that is cherished, and in effect its improved health, vibrancy and your enjoyment of its attractiveness.
